Installing Version 1 of the DPT 2000 Series SCSI Adapter Device Driver for NEXTSTEP Release 3.2 for Intel Processors.
These instructions show you how to install Version 1 of the DPT 2000 Series SCSI adapter device driver on an Intel-based computer running NEXTSTEP(TM) Release 3.2. The driver is distributed in an Installer package file named DPT2000SCSIDriver.pkg.
The DPT 2000 Series SCSI adapter device driver supports the DPT 2021 ISA adapter as well as the DPT 2000 Series of high-performance caching SCSI adapters, including the DPT 2012 EISA, 2022 EISA, and 2122 EISA adapters.
Refer to the Smart Cache III User's Manual that comes with the adapter, particularly Chapter 3, "EISA Configuration Utility." This manual contains other information that you should read before using the adapter.
This updated driver fixes a number of problems associated with the driver shipping with NEXTSTEP release 3.2, including unreliable SCSI timeouts, adapter failure after SCSI resets during startup, and lack of support for multiple EATA protocol SCSI adapters (bug numbers 41908, 40733, and 35816). The updated driver also corrects a problem with Bernoulli and other removable drivers where the cache of a disk's file system isn't cleared when the disk is ejected and another inserted.
Note: This driver replaces the DPT 2012-B EISA SCSI adapter driver on NEXTSTEP 3.2.
Note: This driver does not support the DPT 2011 ISA Adapter.
Caution: If your startup disk is connected to the ISA version of the DPT 2021 SCSI adapter with the cache turned on, never turn off your computer by clicking the Power Off button in the Workspace Manager's Log Out panel or the Power Off button in the login window. If you do, the hard disk will appear damaged the next time you turn on the computer, requiring a lengthy disk-checking process before NEXTSTEP starts up. Instead, turn off your computer by logging out, clicking the Restart button in the login window, and when the message "Restarting the computer" disappears, pressing your computer's power switch.
Installing the Device Driver
1. If you received the DPT2000SCSIDriver.pkg file via NeXTmail(TM) or another electronic source, place a copy of the file in a location where you can access it when you log in as root.
2. Log in as root.
Only the superuser, root, can install the device driver. If you're not sure how to log in as root, see your system administrator.
3. If you received the DPT2000SCSIDriver.pkg file on a floppy disk, insert the disk in the floppy disk drive and choose Check for Disks from the Workspace Manager(TM) application's Disk menu. When the disk icon appears in the File Viewer, double-click it to open it.
4. Double-click the DPT2000SCSIDriver.pkg file.
5. Click the Install button in the Installer package window. When the panel asks you to confirm that you want to install software for Intel-based computers, click Install. Then if a panel warns you you're about to overwrite existing files, click Continue.
6. When the installation is complete, choose Quit from the Installer menu.
Configuring the Device Driver
1. Before you begin, note the slots into which you plan to plug your adapters. Then login as root and start up the Configure application by double-clicking Configure.app (it's in /NextAdmin).
2. Click the SCSI icon at the top of Configure's Summary window. Remove all current SCSI devices.
3. Click Done then click Save.
4. Choose Quit from the Configure menu.
5. Use the WorkspaceManager in UNIX expert mode or use Terminal.app to remove the Instance.table file in the /usr/Devices/DPT2012.config/ directory.
6. Retart up the Configure application by double-clicking Configure.app.
7. Click the SCSI icon at the top of Configure's Summary window.
8. Click Add in Configure's SCSI Devices window, and in the Add SCSI Devices panel that opens, select either the "DPT 2021 ISA SCSI Adapter" or the "DPT 2x22 Series EISA SCSI Adapter" in the list, depending upon which name matches your adapter, and click Add.
5. Select the DMA, IRQ, and Port settings that match the settings you will make on the adapter itself or with the ECU (be sure you use the port number to match the slot you noted in step 1, see the following caution).
Caution: You must set the I/O port address to match the slot in which you install the adapter. The I/O port you select with Configure is in the form 0xzc88, where z is the EISA slot number. For example, if you install the adapter in slot 4, the I/O port address is 0x4c88. Note: The EISA version of the DPT SCSI 2000 adapter does not use a DMA channel, so Configure won't let you select one. Note: If your computer's startup disk isn't connected to the DPT SCSI adapter, you don't need to enable an ISA I/O port address in the ECU (leaving you an "extra" I/O port address to use for other purposes).
6. Click Done then click Save.
7. Choose Quit from the Configure menu.
Installing the Adapter
If you are using an EISA version of the DPT 2000 Series SCSI adapter, note the number of the EISA slot in which you installed the adapter.
Remember to run the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) to modify the configuration of the EISA adapter to match the slot number into which you have installed the adapter. If the DPT 2000 Series SCSI adapter controls a boot driver, disable SmartROM and enable ISA ports. On a secondary adapter be sure the I/O ports are disabled.
Removing the Install Package and Restarting the Computer
1. If you had created a copy of the DPT2000SCSIDriver.pkg file (step 1 in the section "Installing the Device Driver"), drag the copy to the recycler.
2. Choose Log Out from the Workspace menu and then click the Restart button in the login window Note: You must restart your computer after installing and configuring the device driver. The next time you start up your computer, it will use the new driver.
