OPENSTEP 4.0 Release Notes:
Supplemental Notes

This file supplements not only the on-line release notes included on both the OPENSTEP 4.0 and OPENSTEP Developer 4.0 CD's (both Windows and Mach), but also any printed release notes packaged with those releases.

Installation

Systems with the ``Windows 95 Shell''

OPENSTEP 4.0 for Windows won't install correctly on systems running the combination of Windows NT 3.51 and the beta version of the ``Windows 95 shell.'' However, OPENSTEP 4.0 for Windows installs correctly on Windows NT 3.51 systems without the shell, as well as on systems running the beta versions of Windows NT 4.0. (69359)

Upgrading an NEC Express II/P60 ST

If you're planning to upgrade an NEC Express II / P60 ST from NEXTSTEP 3.3 to OPENSTEP 4.0 for Mach, please read the following:

The DPT2000 SCSI driver is now obsolete and has been replaced by the more generic DPTSCSI driver along with a ``driver personality''--the DPT On-Board SCSI driver--that's been created specifically for the NEC Express II / P60 ST. Unfortunately, machines running NEXTSTEP 3.3 with the DPT 2021 ISA SCSI personality installed and configured don't upgrade properly to the new DPT On-Board SCSI driver personality, preventing the machine from booting after the upgrade.

You can prevent this by using either of the following procedures:

* Before upgrading to OPENSTEP 4.0, download the DPTSCSI driver from NeXTanswers (http://www.next.com/NeXTanswers/HTMLFiles/
1889.htmld/1889.html
). Install the driver, then launch Configure.app. In Configure, select the SCSI icon, remove the curent driver, and add the DPT On-Board SCSI driver. Reboot and upgrade normally.

or,

* After upgrading, don't click on the Restart button in Upgrader. Instead, launch Configure.app, select the SCSI icon, remove the current driver, and add the DPT On-Board SCSI driver personality.

If you've already upgraded and cannot boot into OPENSTEP 4.0 for Mach, boot from the OPENSTEP installation boot diskette. Simply insert the disk into the disk drive, power on the machine, then type the following at the ``Boot:'' prompt:

fd()mach_kernel rootdev=sd0

Follow the on-screen directions. Once OPENSTEP has booted, log in as root and launch Configure.app. In Configure, select the SCSI icon, remove the current SCSI driver, and add the DPT On-Board SCSI driver personality.

Drivers

Pathlight SSA Driver

The Pathlight SSA driver is considered a beta-quality driver since it hasn't been officially tested by NeXT's Quality Assurance department. We recommend that you download and install the released version of this driver once it becomes available.

Intel82557 Network Driver

The Intel82557NetworkDriver is considered a beta-quality driver. There is one known bug in the driver which prevents the adapter from connecting with the network. This has been fixed in the latest 4.0 Beta driver, which can be obtained from NeXTanswers (http://www.next.com/NeXTanswers/NABrowse?/
NEXTSTEP/Intel_Configuration_Information/Drivers/4.0_Drivers/Beta
). We recommend that you download and install the released version of this driver once it becomes available.

Interface Builder

Nib File Compatibility

Any nib file generated by Interface Builder under OPENSTEP 4.0 (Windows or Mach) that contains a text object won't be OpenStep compliant.
